In its early years, the camera recorded the horrors of the First World War, both on the ground[4] and in the air – so well that the Aeronautical Society of America awarded Carl Akeley a lifetime membership in January 1919 “in recognition of his important invention of a camera especially designed for use in aeroplane work.”[5]
