Artisanal Emulsions - Text 2

Konrad & Kurfurst (2014), by the filmmaker Esther Urlus, co-founder of the Filmwerkplaats laboratory in Rotterdam, came out of these experiments, which are also described in the book Re:Inventing the Pioneers: Film Experiments on Handmade Silver Gelatin Emulsion and Color Methods, a sort of log book showing the fruit of her experiments and explaining the photochemical bases for creating an artisanal emulsion. In this sense Esther Urlus echoes the ideas of the filmmaker Robert Scaller, co-founder of the Handmade Film Institute in Boulder, Colorado, who also calls for innovation using artisanal film stock. These convergent projects led to the organization of the first seminar devoted to the manufacture of artisanal film stock, the Maddox seminar,[2] which was held from 2014 to 2016 and brought together filmmakers such as Robert Schaller and Kevin Rice from Colorado, Alex McKenzie from Vancouver, Étienne Caire from Grenoble, Lindsay McIntyre[3] from Calgary, Esther Urlus from Rotterdam and Guillaume Ferry from Nantes. These gatherings also gave rise to the web page Wikipelloche, which is devoted to silver gelatin film stock.
