Tourism and Amateurism - Text 1

The action camera, part of the contemporary obsession for documenting oneself, plays a key role in contemporary amateur video practises. This can be seen in this comment by Vincent Laforet, for whom the GoPro “has allowed people to focus more on experiencing the moment, as opposed to focusing on capturing it.”[1] This myth has even taken root in the manufacturer’s advertising strategies, which stress the use of these cameras to record tourism experiences. One particular example of this was the company’s advertising for the launch of the HERO6 camera in 2017, whose slogan was “Live the moment. Capture the moment. Share the moment.”[2] Consider in addition the video “GoPro: Capture Different” (2016), which also stresses the experience being lived rather than the act of recording it.
