But filmmaking during the mid-twentieth century was roughly characterized by efforts to maintain earlier stylistic accomplishments, while cautiously experimenting with new techniques and technologies like widescreen processes, and trying to determine how to make style less linked to any particular device or apparatus, to maintain effects that had already been proven, such as the dynamic montage constructions of the 1925 Ben-Hur. The changes that did occur, both stylistically and technologically, were for the most part incremental.
