Kevin Brownlow calls it one of the most impressive examples of early editing, if not of the whole history of editing:

The forty-two cameramen had shot 53 000 feet of film on the big day, but editor Lloyd Nosler had to cope with 200 000 feet altogether for this one sequence. On the final show print the chariot race ran to 750 feet. But those 750 feet are among the most valuable in motion picture history. For this was the first time that an action director, realizing the potential of the cinema, had possessed courage and skill enough to fulfill it.[3]
