Renewal of the Elements through the Viewer’s Perception - Text 3
The editing in another Kurosawa film, but one in a completely different vein, Ran (乱, 1985), imposes a much faster tempo than that of the music and of the mounted, static and attentive archers. The music already induces anxiety, a foreboding which contrasts with the pictorial beauty of these horse riders immobile at the top of verdant hills. The wait becomes surveillance; contemplation becomes anxiety. To the latter is added the nervous and precipitated nature of the cuts, which propel us from one end to the other of the craggy relief, with increasingly closed and menacing views.
