Cel Animation - Text 2
For whereas the film character was endowed with movement, the background decor was often stationary, like a space independent of the character. The character would take up position within this space – just like in reality. Some observers might think that the advent of the cel animation technique was conceived as part of a logic of “realism”: as in live-action filming, the decor pre-exists the characters, which move, while the background remains immobile. And yet this “realist” conception of the drawn space, enabling viewers to distinguish the characters from the decor, was not self-evident. Initially, moreover, the rise of cel animation was a response to completely different considerations. The issues these considerations raise merit attention here.
