One sometimes sees in the trade press German neologisms to describe the emerging profession of the independent Cutter, for example Bildschneider (“cutter of images”). The institutionalisation process of the Cutter’s function culminated in 1931 with the founding of a professional association representing editors in the German film industry, the Verband der Filmcutter Deutschlands.
