Montage in German Silent Cinema - Text 6

Editing was carried out not only at the production level, but also at the level of distribution, particularly when prints of foreign films were prepared for the German market. This activity included translating and inserting intertitles, but also adapting films to the tastes of German audiences. The person in charge of this work was known as the Negativ-Dramaturg, a name borrowed from a professional function linked to the theatre which indicated that this re-editing sometimes transformed the dramatic structure of the work itself.
