Montage in German Silent Cinema - Text 5
The most clearly identified professional group tied to the manual practice of film assembly in the early 1910s was that of the Filmkleberinnen (“female film joiners”), made up almost exclusively of women, whose job was to cut and join shots in films, negatives and positive prints alike. The Filmkleberinnen profession was quite low on the wage scale in the film industry. In 1926, in Austrian distribution companies, the Filmkleberinnen earned the same amount as unskilled manual labourers (Hilfsarbeiter) over eighteen years of age and around 50 % more than the wage of a messenger boy, while projectionists were paid nearly twice as much.
