Patents and Prowess - Text 5
The camera’s marketing is another path we propose to follow. According to the advertisements and classified ads published in trade journals at the time, commercial interest in the Akeley began in 1917, driven by curious amateurs titillated by articles published about the device while awaiting its patent. The camera was first acquired by the United States Department of Defense for its needs: “The Akeley camera has been adopted by the United States Government for the use of the Photographic Division of the Signal Corps – some of the first completed models being now on their way to France.”[12] Numerous advertisements were published in the trade press to announce the news and promote the camera.
