Montage in the USSR and Its Fifteen Fundamental Procedures According to Semyon Timoshenko - Text 7

14. Refrain (refren)

Refrain, through the repetition of a “motif,” makes it possible to establish a connection between different parts of a film – and thus to devise a kind of “commentary” on the action depicted.

15. “inner montage” (vnutrikadrovyj montaž)

Finally, this procedure describes a superimposition, which can be made up of several elements and which can involve images of a detail or of the past, or a vision of the future. Because this procedure can simultaneously bring into play in this way several of the other montage procedures described by Timoshenko, he invites Soviet filmmakers to use it more often.
