These improvised adjustments to the camera enabled operators to take control of the technology and to adapt it to situations in which they used the Akeley. Some of the other ways in which they altered the technical features of the camera include: modifying the tripod to use the camera in new positions;^[12] adding a pressure plate to avoid scratching the film stock when shooting in dusty conditions;^[13] and replacing the hand crank with a motor to film uninterruptedly without having to crank the camera.^[14]
