Colour Overflows the Screen: Christian Lebrat - Text 5

Finally, for Holon (1981-82), Christian Lebrat returned to a palette of three colours (red, green, blue) using filters, abandoning image-by-image shooting for a manner of filming determined by a new instrument. This system modulated the light captured by the camera in order to vary the intensity and synthesis of the colours. In order to do so, he created a series of nine perforated ribbons, only the first having colours, and he placed it in front of the lens (a practice used in Autoportrait d’un dispositif). Lebrat used the same film stock several times in order to create superimposition with these ribbons, whose perforations change in size as the shots advance.
