Colour Overflows the Screen: Christian Lebrat - Text 2
Christian Lebrat defines his work as post-structural, in the sense that his artistic experiments, unlike those of his predecessors, seeks in particular to dispense with a didactic exposition of the functioning of the apparatus by revealing it right from the earliest shots in the film. He shot Film nº 2 in 1976 with a spring-drive Pathé Webo 16 mm camera. This film format enabled him to fragment the photogram into vertical bands. Using a cardboard mask placed in the camera’s filter holder, he shot portions of the space image by image; then, after rewinding the film, he exposed the as-yet unexposed parts of the already exposed photograms.
