A Film Camera Put to Non-standard Use: Rose Lowder and the Bolex H16 - Text 3
The Bouquets series, made between 1994 and 2022 and comprising to date thirty films of one minute in length each, is emblematic of this manner of conceiving the work of composing the film. By establishing photogram by photogram the structure of the film as it was being constructed using visual scores, Lowder could place side by side colourful elements she had recorded in different places at different times. This highly singular manner of working, which she was the first to practise, was both the product of a profound familiarity with the inherent possibilities of the Bolex H16 – in particular its precision, handling ability and resistance – and, at the same time, a means of getting around or even going beyond the uses for which this camera was initially conceived, including in terms of image-by-image recording.
