After CinemaScope, other systems based on 35 mm film were developed, but they did not have the same success. Superscope, for example, was developed by the studio RKO. This process consisted in shooting the film with a standard lens, anamorphizing the image of the initial print onto another print, and de-anamorphizing the image in projection. This process, which was more economical but whose image was of poorer quality, made it possible to obtain a widescreen image at a lower cost. Robert Aldrich’s Vera Cruz (1954) and John Sturges’ Underwater (1955) are two films shot in Superscope.
