Journalism - Text 3
As Myers Morrison demonstrates, what Stoughton’s study shows is that the video did not in fact depict aggression towards the filmer but rather two men dancing vigorously. This action camera’s image suffers from what Stoughton calls “deceptive intensity,” or the fact that the movement’s intensity leads viewers to interpret the image as showing an action much more extreme than it is in reality. Images often clumsily filmed with action cameras, whether by amateurs or the police, may very well depict the event “in all its brutal reality,”[6] but it remains the case that this reality will be reframed by the discourses accompanying their circulation, as well as by the biases of those who view it.
