The Opacity of Representations of 3D Scanning and Motion Capture in the Cinema - Text 9
In addition, we encounter in this film also the imaginary of 3D scanning, as the computer screen analyses data transcribed in the form of a reference grid specific to computer generated images and making it possible to “apprehend the object mathematically.”[5] And yet these aspects, which reinforce the impression of a “realist” treatment of the process, equally conceal the opacity of the technique and its transfer to the level of science fiction, as the scanning disintegrates the object the moment it puts it in the digital matrix. It was undoubtedly for these reasons that Lisberger allows himself, in this sequence, an insert shot on a very Wellesian sign reading “Do not enter,” pretending it represents a technological danger.
