White Noise - Text 4
Nevertheless, white noise is not just a nuisance. It has a multitude of uses, such as those identified by Sourav Gupta in his article “Simple White Noise Generator Circuit”,[3] published in Circuit Digest. In it he shows the role of white noise in the music world (as aural material or for equalisation in concerts), in electronic engineering (to obtain the impulse response of an electric circuit), in programming (to use its random frequency to generate random numbers) and in medicine (to treat tinnitus).
More surprisingly, white noise is used for relaxation and meditation. When listening to and concentrating on this constant frequency, other frequencies present in the near sound environment are no longer distracting. As Thomas Andrillon remarks, “The receptors in the inner ear are not sensitive to the same frequencies: if they are all activated at the same time with white noise, one can have the sensation that external sounds are softened”.[4]
