Making Film Music Digitally: Temp Tracks and Mock-ups - Text 1

In Hollywood over the past twenty years, excepting the cases of a few composers such as John Williams and Christopher Young, film directors no longer choose a composer for their film by listening to a few notes on an accordion or piano, but rather on the basis of a mock-up. Created by the composer on his or her digital audio workstation (DAW), a mock-up serves both in hiring a composer for a project — in many cases following a composer casting[1] — and to come up with musical ideas for all the film’s musical cues.[2]
