The Modernist Cinema - Text 1
The invisible cinema, conceived by the Austrian filmmaker Peter Kubelka (born 1934), was from 1970 to 1974 the first projection venue of Anthology Film Archives in New York. A pioneer of experimental cinema in his native country, in 1964 Kubelka also co-founded (with Peter Konlechner) the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna. With this background as a curator, he was, with Jonas Mekas and P. Adams Sitney, a leading figure on Anthology’s founding committee. Their shared project was formulated by Sitney in these words: “Anthology Film Archives is the first film museum exclusively devoted to the film as an art. What are the essentials of the film experience?”[1]
