The Work of Sound Engineers in France (1930s to 1950s) - Text 1
What is peculiar about the profession of the sound engineer in the film industry is that it arose only thirty-five years after films began to be projected. As talking cinema became widespread in France in the 1930s, a new profession came into being. For the “old” technicians, these new recruits hampered the film shoot. Sound engineers placed microphones in the field of view, created shadows with their booms, and laid cables on the floor of the set for the sound to be recorded in a booth at a distance from the shooting.
