Dissecting the Action Cam - Text 2

Invented by Nicholas Woodman, the GoPro HERO was launched in 2005 as a 35 mm still camera housed in a submersible case which could be strapped to the wrist.[2] Although the camera produced only still photographs, rather than the kind of video with which we associate it today, we can already see in the uses for which it was designed – that of capturing a given activity from the filmer’s point of view – the first steps towards the action cam of today: the target market of this first camera was surfers wanting to take snapshots of their adventures from their surfboards while out on the water. We see in this use the basic element of the action cam, whose goal is to document the experience of the body – organic or not – wearing it.[3] But what about the technical components of the device which help it better document this experience?
